Dear Provost John Etchemendy,
As you know, Stanford University is experiencing a deficit in care at Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS). Approximately one in seven Stanford students sought care from CAPS last year, the highest in CAPS history. Wait times for face-to-face counseling appointments average between 1-3 weeks, which is far too long for the majority of students.
Mental health care at Stanford is being rationed; in part due to limitations on the number of free sessions (typically six) a student may have with CAPS. After these free sessions, students are referred to outside providers. CAPS is aware that many of these students do not successfully find outside care, and thus are left with no professional care at all.
In order to meet the mental health needs for the Stanford community, there must be increased availability of professional counseling services. CAPS is understaffed and it needs to hire several additional full-time counselors to adequately meet the demand for care. CAPS provides a crucial service for Stanford students, and while it has made significant improvements in recent years, it still does not fully satisfy the needs of the student body.
Stanford usually sets the standard of excellence for its peer institutions. In this case, Stanford should set the standard for mental health care quality and accessibility as a model for all other universities.
