The Provost at The Catholic University of America recently announced a proposal to close the Department of Media and Communication Studies. The Provost has proposed to create a new School of Music, Visual, and Performing Arts. In this new school, Media Studies will combine with the Art department to form the department of Art and Communications, joining Music and Drama. The Provost also announced that under this proposal, three full-time faculty members in Media & Communication Studies will be terminated and replaced with contract-hired adjunct teachers.

Leaving the School of Arts and Sciences will affect the perception our degrees are given by potential employers. Bachelor's degrees earned from departments with mostly part-time adjunct professors are valued less on the job market. The Department of Media and Communication Studies is a dynamic and valued part of the CUA community; we believe that this decision is unwise and is not in the best interest of the students.
