I am a 7th grade student at Dixon Middle School in Provo Utah. Please join me in supporting later start times for Provo students.

Studies have shown that when students get more sleep they get better grades.  Later start times in school will allow students to get more sleep. On a scale of 0 to 100, their median scores increased from 77.5 to 82.0. This is why I think that we should push back the start time until 8:30am this will give students at least 30 more minutes of sleep. This will also help kids be more engaged in their first and second period classes.

We should find what is best for the students and what will help them the most in their educational future. To start I want to propose that our start time for school should be at 8:30am and end time at 3:30. With the half day schedule right now we could do school from 8:30am to 1:30. This will only cut out about 3 minutes of class time with only three minutes of class time gone and thirty minutes of more sleep. I think that this will make a huge difference in how students act. I think having a later start time and a few minutes shorter periods will help students concentrate more and be more engaged.
