Paul Lenarczyk started this petition to Provincial governments

We all know that public education is the best instrument for social change. A better educated population is more caring, more empathetic, more involved in the world, and every aspect of that world, than a less educated population. We also know that educating people in the arts is a very effective way of fostering "soft skills" - not the math and science which are necessary for our society to function, not even the reading and writing that help us communicate and express our ideas, but those essential EQ instead of IQ skills like empathy, caring, emotional awareness, connection, sympathy, etc.

I would like the provincial governments of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, and perhaps others as well, but these are the two in which I have direct experience, to require students to take a comparable number of hours of compulsory arts education to the other fields of learning - English, Math, Science - where there are mandatory requirements. This presents an opportunity for our provinces to take a leading role in ensuring a populace that has a better rounded population. Nova Scotia currently requires 1 arts credit at the Grade 10-12 level while at the same time mandating 3 math credits, and 3 language arts credits, along with a few other requirements. New Brunswick does not require arts credits beyond grade 9. This is a mistake. It means that students not only do not develop an appropriate appreciation for the arts, but more importantly they may lack in those other "soft skills" development. An education in the arts has been shown (research studies too numerous to list, but for example, see http://www.ascd.org/publications/educational-leadership/dec18/vol76/num04/Does-Arts-Education-Matter%C2%A2.aspx to produce a better rounded individual and society.

Please include arts courses beyond Grade 9/10 in mandatory graduation requirements.
