The process to come off these drugs is hard enough and should be supported by the same system that put us on them.

I have lived experience of the difficulties of coming off psychiatric drugs. Some relate to difficulties with the drugs themselves, ie the doses provided do not permit a slow taper, such that any attempt to reduce dosage can lead to intolerable and potentially hazardous withdrawal effects. This has the effect of trapping the user on the drugs. Others relate to the support available, including physician lack of knowledge about deprescription or denial of withdrawal effects. At worse this can include the disingenuous labelling of withdrawal effects as relapse. The current system is skewed towards deprescribing these drugs on a long-term basis, with neither drug companies nor doctors showing any interest in getting people off. Tapering strips would help, as would training which insisted as a matter of professional ethics that a doctor be competent safely to deprescribe all drugs that are prescribed.

I have recently completed a three year taper off amitriptyline with liquid amitriptyline prescribed by my GP. After 15 years of serious dependency I could not have achieved this by pill cutting.

I need them myself. I'm taking Lyrica and want to not be taking them but I can't reduce the dosage without absolute agonies and other really evil side effects
