Why this petition matters

Started by Rachel Stein

Currently, in the UK, the NHS maternity and post natal wards provide each parent with a free bag of new parent goodies, including postpartum sanitary pads, nappies and wet wipes - all of which are disposable and all from well known big brand names.

The situation of waste removal and landfill on our planet is absolutely dyer, and it is predicated that by 2050 there will be more plastic in our oceans than fish. This is not the type of world parents chose to bring children up in, and we believe the changes can start from the moment a child is born.

Reusable nappy incentive schemes are available through councils, cloth nappy hire kits are available from local libraries, and almost every single cloth nappy brand offers high discounts and trial kits to help to make cloth and reusable products mainstream.

But not enough parents are exposed to the masses of benefits of using cloth to themselves and babies, let alone the planet.

Why cloth nappies and reusable sanitary products are worth considering:

  • They reduce waste to landfill (children alone need between 6,000 to 7,000 nappies and people use 12000 pads and tampons throughout their life)
    - Nappies, pads and tampons don't break down properly in landfill
    - Can help save up to £1500 on nappies from birth to toilet training and up to £50 each year on menstrual items
    - Some reusable menstrual items will last for up to 10 years
    - More environmentally friendly, especially if items like nappies are sold on
    - Less plastic (did you know the average menstrual pad can contain up to 5 plastic bags within the pad itself! Including the packaging, it's a lot of plastic!)
    - No harmful chemicals
    - Never risk running out, meaning less visits to the shops

We are petitioning that companies such as Emma's Diary, and Bounty include reusable products over disposable products in their bags. If funds don’t allow for this, to at least provide information leaflets and coupons in the bag.
