Why this petition matters

Period poverty is a difficulty/inability to access safe period products due to being unable to afford them. The average person who menstruates spends an estimated £13 per cycle on period products. A 2017 survey conducted by Plan International UK found 1 in 10 girls in the UK had been unable to afford menstrual products at some point in time. This can limit the ability of people on their periods to attend school/work reducing future opportunities and increasing inequality.

Menstruating is not a choice and as such period products are essential. If people don't have access to safe sanitary products it can result in medical complications and infections, risking the health of poorer individuals who can't afford them. The UK government is failing these people by not providing easy access to free period products for those who need them.

In 2020 Scotland became the first country to make period products free for everyone who needs them. The cost of this is projected to be less than 0.00015% of Scotland's total annual tax revenue proving this is achievable and affordable for wealthy countries like England and the rest of the UK.

It is essential the rest of the UK follows Scotland to ensure legal movements combatting inequality are continued. Periods shouldn't be limiting the education and careers of women and people who menstruate. The UK government should provide period products to people who menstruate free of charge.

Close the gap, period.
