Sunbury is a rapidly growing commuter suburb of Melbourne and surrounding areas.

Many local residents rely on public transport to commute to work, social engagements as well as appointments with health care practitioners and other personal needs. Sunbury is forecast to continue to grow as one of Hume's rapidly developing communities.

The Sunbury station maintains its unique heritage structures but does not adequately support local residents due to the lack of Elevators.  Instead residents have to either use a series of steep stairs, or very long ramps making access difficult for those of all ages and mobility as well as taking considerable time and effort.

All other major stations on the Sunbury Line have been recently redeveloped to incorporate Elevators for accessible access leaving Sunbury as the legacy station.
