Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) under the Department of Homeland Security is holding more than 1,500 immigrant detainees in New Jersey . 80 % of the immigrants are being held in criminal jails. Between 60 and 70% have been resident in the United States for more than 6 years, most have families, homes and jobs and pay taxes. Many have citizen children and spouses. All are our neighbors who have been incarcerated and separated from their families because our country is unable resolve a pressing social problem by political means. Nationwide we detain 400,000 immigrants per year at a cost of nearly $2 billion while disrupting thousands of communities. 2,700 new immigration detention beds to the already crowded and inhumane immigration detention system. The proposed facility in Essex County is one of at least five new detention centers that ICE is planning to build throughout the country.
