Dogs are very important to humans. Dogs can help reduce stress levels in human beings and are often used for therapeutic purposes in hospitals, nursing homes and hospices. Playing with a dog, exercising, walking or running can help human beings reduce stress levels and increase their health. Dog interaction with humans can help combat challenges associated with some form of heart disease and autism. Dogs raised as service, assistance or therapy animals can open up the world for disabled individuals.
Dogs for Good has a specific role through all of its services to support people with a range of disabilities and conditions enabling children and adults to interact with assistance dogs, pet dogs or therapy dogs. In all of our work, we see the huge difference that dogs make to people’s health and well-being.
They help guide people who have lost their sight. They assist people who have diabetes or seizures. A lot of service dogs can sense when something is wrong and alert their owners. Some of them can even open fridges and bring food to their human.
When livestock were domesticated about 7,000 to 9,000 years ago, dogs served as herders and guardians of sheep, goats, and cattle. Although many still serve in these capacities, dogs are mainly used for social purposes and companionship. Today dogs are employed as guides for the blind and disabled or for police work.
