Why this petition matters

Started by Imroze Rehal

Upon the enactment of the Indian Act, from the start of the residential school system to the Sixties Scoop, eradication of Indigenous culture had been a prime motive of the Canadian government.

As a result of these colonial policies, traditional child-rearing practices in Indigenous communities were disrupted. The Indian Act was established with the aim of increasing the population of white Euro-Canadians by eradicating Indigenous communities through forced conversion. This was primarily implemented by the residential school system, which promoted Christianity and Euro-Canadian traditions. It was Indigenous children who were forced into residential schools and abused into abiding by Euro-Canadian practices and leaving their Indigenous identity behind. Similarly, the Sixties Scoop was implemented to increase a smoother transition into the Euro-Canadian lifestyle. The Sixties Scoop involved the forceful removal of Indigenous children from their families to then be placed into white-dominated foster care homes. In Canada, 7.7% of the children population constitutes Indigenous children out of which 52.2% are in foster care.

The wide-scale and forceful removal of Indigenous children from their communities coupled with their horrific treatment by child welfare authorities at the provincial/territorial level have instigated Indigenous communities to consider developing their own federally-funded, on-reserve child welfare agencies.

We call upon Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to aid in better funding of the Indigenous child welfare system to stop the separation between Indigenous children and their families and culture.

Please support and keep Indigenous children, families, and communities together by joining the movement. Sign and share this petition today and be the reason for a new change
