Horses and camels play an important part in Egypt’s tourism, many families depend on them for their survival, still these working animals are being mistreated.
I witnessed serious animal abuses around the The Three Pyramids of Giza and its surroundings while vacationing in Egypt in July 2017.
Animals such as cart and riding horses and camels are being brutally beaten, neglected and whipped as they cart loads of tourists around the pyramids. They are forced to work in the extreme heat without shelter, food or water supply for 20 hours every day and facing a long agonizing life. They have medical diseases and conditions and obvious, untreated giant flesh wounds under their saddles and still being ridden. Undoubtedly, they demonstrate distress and are worked or starved to death.
This area is „Hell on Earth” for carriage horses and camels. This horror must be stopped now.
Stopping the misery would surely benefit not only the working animals in Giza, Luxor and Aswan, but would raise awareness of the importance of animal rights as a topic in Egypt in general.
To the President of the Arab Republic of Egypt, Mr. Abdel Fattah el-Sisi,
We urge you to implement and support a better animal welfare practice.
The veterinary profession shall continually strive to improve animal health and welfare through education, collaboration, advocacy and the development of legislation and regulations.
The lack of policy and legislative developments on the issue of animals used for work and entertainment leaves a large number of animals outside the sphere of legal protection and therefore further policy development is required in Egypt.
We demand that you need to make owners and keepers responsible for ensuring that the welfare needs of their animals in the area of the pyramids, and other tourist attractions in Luxor and Aswan are met and create higher penalties for those convicted of animal cruelty.
We require water and food provisions, proper handling and health care to animals and should be cared for in ways that minimize fear, pain, stress and suffering in the Giza Plateau, Luxor and Aswan.
We also ask you to ensure the national and international animal welfare groups a more visible or permanent presence next to the pyramids themselves and around other tourist attractions in Egypt, in Luxor and Aswan.
Raising awareness and the quality of education about proper animal care is crucial. Many studies show that cruelty towards animals is not inherent, but learned. A lack of education and awareness of animal owners are further barriers to progress. Therefore, we urge you to put a strong emphasis on providing sufficient education regarding proper care and use of working animals.
We require that the above mentioned requirements have to be fulfilled and controlled regularly by the Ministry of Agriculture of Egypt, General Organization for Veterinary Services, the Ministry of Tourism of Egypt, the local authorities and other animal welfare groups.
To all who has compassion and kindness for animals,
We must send a strong message that violence against any feeling creature is unacceptable, it is time to voice our views against injustice and cruelty towards animals.
Let's be the voice of those who cannot defend themselves! Let's make a difference!
Please help stop the animal abuses by taking action now. Please sign and share this petition today.
I would be grateful if you could contact by e-mail the President of Egypt and the Minister of Tourism of Egypt in order to adopt a meaningful animal welfare policy that spares carriage horses and camels from the worst abuses they currently endure near the tourist attractions in Egypt, in the desert surrounding The Three Pyramids of Giza, Luxor and Aswan.
