Why this petition matters

Publishing freedom, a cornerstone of democracy and human rights, faces unprecedented challenges worldwide. The assault on publishing takes various forms: the imprisonment of journalists and writers, the suppression of independent media outlets, the banning and censorship of books, and the killings of authors and publishers. In recent decades, we have witnessed an alarming trend where governments, particularly authoritarian regimes, are curbing the fundamental right to free expression and the dissemination of information. We have also seen extremist groups targeting authors and publishers to stifle their voices.

Shuddhashar Freevoice, a progressive publishing house from Bangladesh, has been targeted both by governing authorities and extremist groups for championing progressive ideas and scholarship. 31 October 2023 marks the eighth year of the attack on the Bangladeshi publishing houses of Jagriti and Shuddhashar, a historic event when two publishers were attacked on the same day. Only one survived, more determined than ever.

To commemorate the day and to champion the right to free speech and the right to publish, we urge the publishing world that 31 October be declared as Freedom to Publish Day. Sign this petition to show your support.
