Why this petition matters

Started by Becky Channer

Development in the Camperdown area has been significant with a new development underway on Dorothy Road, an under-review proposal development on Old Lakeshore Road at the bottom of Camperdown Road and development commencing at the West end of George McRae Road, where the developer has asked to purchase municipal land for the purpose of widening the road. The constant allowances being provided to developers in this area are adding up and is already impacting mature forests and animal habitat.  Attached to this land under review for purchase is land currently classified as Hazard and is adjacent to a holding provision to protect the natural and scientific interests of the area. Whilst the request is for a disposition for the widening of a road, we worry this makes all the land vulnerable to a sale for development. So before this happens we need to make it clear to the Town of Blue Mountains that these lands, attached to the land being requested for purchase, needs to stay the way they are especially because they are adjacent to the Nipissing Geological Ridge Formation.

Any further eradication of this currently protected midpoint of this part of the Nipissing Ridge will have a devastating impact on the environment that is so fragile on the escarpment.  This is a significant wildlife corridor for deer, fox, and coyotes that we must maintain and protect, and is an environmentally significant area of the Nipissing Ridge and unique in that it is one of very few meadows left in the area, which, as we all know, meadows are important ecologically to a variety of wildlife not to mention the birds and the bees.  So let's make it clear while we can that land is important to the environment and the community.

The short-term lift in the economy is minimal versus the long-term precedent that too much development will have on the escarpment and the loss of valuable animal habitats and green spaces.

The Planning Committee and TOB have our community under attack with an unprecedented level of development that must be slowed down. While most of this construction is underway, we have a chance to draw a line in the sand for no more development, and to protect our wildlife and green spaces now and in the future.

There is no better moment than now to demand the slowdown of overdevelopment and thereby preserve our neighbourhood and the ecosystem and wildlife of the escarpment. So, we please ask for your help in slowing down development in the Camperdown area by signing this petition.   Thank you.
