The defunding of Planned Parenthood would adversely impact millions of women nationwide by limiting their access to affordable reproductive health care services. Planned Parenthood health centers provide:
- birth control for 2 million people
- over 4 million STD tests and treatments
- over 360,000 breast exams
- over 270,000 Pap tests
Without access to such services, this would increase the number of unintended pregnancies and self-induced abortions.
President Trump stated that "funding (for Planned Parenthood) can stay if abortion goes." The 1977, Hyde Amendment ALREADY PROHIBITS THIS: it dictates that federal Medicaid funds can only be used to fund abortions in cases of rape, incest, or to protect the life of the mother.
- Abortion accounts for only 3% of the services it provided in 2014
Although abortion only comprises a small fraction of organization’s services, the GOP has used the procedure as a pretext to launch a despicable smear campaign. Without access to safe abortions, women will be susceptible to health complications and maternal death.
Prohibiting abortion DOES NOT decrease the number of abortions performed; it simply forces women to resort to more dangerous methods.
- For example, nationwide search rates for self-induced abortions spiked 40 percent in 2011, when states around the country implemented 92 new abortion restrictions
Abortion rates DO NOT decrease with stricter laws. If we want to protect women and their children alike, we must find a common ground in reducing unintended pregnancies and self-induced abortions. Consider this:
A lower rate of poverty and improved access to health care are associated with education and a lower rate of abortion. Also, unintended pregnancies may be reduced by providing no-cost contraception.
Planned Parenthood addresses these findings:
- 1.5 million receive sex education and outreach
- Free birth control for 2 million people
Through such services, Planned Parenthood has prevented an estimated 579,000 unintended pregnancies.
Six in 10 women who access care from a family planning health care center like Planned Parenthood consider it their main source of health care.
Defunding Planned Parenthood would hit the people who rely on federal insurance and public health programs most- people who already face barriers such as:
- people of low income
- people of color
- people who live in rural area
With the defunding of Planned Parenthood, at least 2.5 million people a year would lose access to the services that Planned Parenthood offers.
We must TRUST women in their reproductive choices.
We must PROTECT women by providing them with safe options.
Please sign this petition if you believe that Planned Parenthood should continue to receive funding for its services that protect women and their health rights.
