Protect our children: make the road outside Weobley’s schools safer
The Issue
We are calling on Herefordshire Council, as the local highways authority, to urgently improve road safety on Burton Wood road, outside Weobley Primary School and Weobley High School.
Close to a thousand children, their parents, carers and staff walk along and cross Burton Wood road every day, yet there are currently no traffic-calming measures, a 30mph speed limit directly outside the school gate and no pedestrian crossing.
What we are asking for
We are calling for the introduction of the following proven road-safety measures:
- A pedestrian crossing serving both schools
- A reduction of the speed limit to 20mph
- Clear 20mph roundels and school warning markings on the road
Many councils across England have already adopted 20mph school zones and enhanced crossings as standard practice. We are simply asking Herefordshire to do the same for Weobley’s children.
Why this is urgent
Many families walk their children to and from school every day and this walk feels unsafe. Several parents, including myself, have experienced near misses.
We are deeply concerned that it should not take a serious injury or fatal accident for action to be taken.
Under the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, local authorities have the power and responsibility to introduce speed limits, pedestrian crossings and traffic-calming measures where they are necessary to improve road safety.
Department for Transport guidance supports:
- 20mph limits outside schools, particularly where children and pedestrians are present
- Traffic-calming as an effective way to reduce speeds and collisions
- Street design that prioritises safety, walking and active travel
- Lower vehicle speeds dramatically reduce the risk of serious injury. At 30mph, the risk of fatal injury to a pedestrian is significantly higher than at 20mph.
Many councils across England have already introduced 20mph school zones and enhanced crossings as standard practice. We are simply asking Herefordshire Council to apply the same approach on Burton Wood.
This is not about blaming drivers. A safer road benefits children, local residents and all road users.
