With all the mass shootings around the nation and isolated shootings in Olathe and In Kansas City I have been very concerned with our children's safety at school and in the community. Olathe East High School had a shooting this past spring and some of the children associated with the Blackbob Park shooting were children enrolled in Santa Fe Trail Middle School. My heart brakes for anyone directly affected to these shootings and I am worried for our community as a whole as this is in our backyards. I feel collectively we can do more to help maintain a safer environment for all. I am creating a petition, WE CAN DO MORE FOR OUR CHILDREN AND EDUCATORS! A few Ideas I have and have seen implemented around the country are reinforcement of the classroom doors. The ability to lock down the classroom doors if there is an active shooter inside. Bullet resistant doors and glass on the doors. Easy access applications put on the children's tablets that notify the police. Implement cameras that the police can access the footage in live time. If a threat is valid only they can unlock the doors to the classrooms to protect anyone in the building of being forced to unlock them. We already have lockdown access on the outside of the building but what happens when the shooter is on the inside?  I just feel that every scenario should be addressed before not after the fact of heinous murders of our children, teachers and support staff. Our concerns and worries are valid! Help me fight for our kids and community! Ideas and solutions are wanted and needed! I know this is a continuous conversation and things don't change overnight but together hopefully we can gain support and encouragement to help keep everyone safe!
