PROTECT OUR CHILDREN AND THE WETLANDS

We encourage the City of Los Angeles to recognize the Ballona Wetlands Ecological Reserve as a park. By doing so, the homeless will be prohibited from living/parking/dwelling within 500ft of the Wetlands. (LAMC 85.02)
Ballona Wetlands Ecological Reserve is the last remaining coastal salt marsh in Los Angeles County. It is home to endangered birds and rare plants. More than 7,000 children go on field trips annually to enjoy the native plants, insects, birds & marine invertebrates. Allowing people to dwell in their vehicle, within 500ft of the Wetlands, imposes a substantial public health and safety concern. We are concerned about the litter, unsanitary conditions, noise and crime, sometimes resulting in altercations, when people/homeless dwell in their vehicles in sensitive areas.
By allowing the homeless dwellers to park within 500ft of the Wetlands, the City is perpetuating an inevitable homeless encampment in Gordon's Market parking lot. The City has designated other areas for homeless dwellers that better suit their needs. MAP
This petition requests Mayor Garcetti and the LA City Council to:
- Protect Ballona Wetlands Ecological Reserve.
- Protect the 7,000 children that go on field trips here.
- Give Ballona Wetlands the same 500ft safe zone as it already gives to schools and parks.
