Protect Milton Falls
Protect Milton Falls
Why this petition matters
The Region of Queens Municipality council have sold the land adjacent to the Milton falls to a developer who plans to build a large apartment complex on the property. This apartment complex will do little to serve the residents of this small, beautiful community, as the rents have been advertised to be in excess of $1500/month - decidedly NOT affordable housing. The council has gone behind the backs of their constituents - after at one point claiming to be planning a farmers market on the property, among other things - selling the land without consulting the community nor taking into consideration the historical value of the site, and they continue to refuse to disclose the selling price. This site is beloved and appreciated by locals, and there is ample opportunity to create a space where locals and visitors alike can appreciate the view of the beautiful Falls and consider the rich history of the community of Milton.
Not only is the beautiful view at risk, but the safety of the community is at risk as there has been some discussion regarding the relocation of a fire hydrant on the site which draws fresh water from the upper part of the Mersey River. In addition, the site is sandwiched between the river and busy roadway, Highway #8, at an intersection that is already plagued by near-misses due to poor visibility around a sharp corner. Adding a large building would cut visibility dramatically at the bridge intersection and exacerbate the risk of collisions on a roadway frequented by logging trucks.
It appears there may be one last chance to save our view of the historic Milton Falls and protect our community, as the land has not yet been rezoned. Please sign your name if you do not support this development and hope to see this land be made into something the entire community can enjoy and appreciate - but don’t stop there! Write or call your councillors and make sure they know you do not support this build! Find out how to reach them HERE
