In Malta we are facing an almost daily destruction of the heritage of our towns, villages and countryside.
Trees are scientifically proven to be important to our health, reducing rates of toxic emissions, dust and noise. Malta has the highest rate of asthma in the EU, and Maltese residents are the most concerned about air pollution. Yet MEPA deprives residents of the benefits of trees when it allows destruction and damage to trees. Roads at Cospicua, Luqa, Fgura, Sliema, Zebbug and Mellieha which used to be lined by beautiful trees are now stripped bare.
Over-development is rated as Malta’s greatest environmental problem, yet permits are being issued to build flats and destroy some of Malta’s finest old gardens like those of Villino Chappelle and Villa Mekrech. Abuse is tolerated and no attempt is made to halt over-development.
We are therefore asking the three political parties to state their position on the protection of our urban trees and old gardens which are such a precious lung in our built-up towns and villages. We ask you to please join us in calling on all parties to recognise that Malta’s health and economic prosperity through tourism depends on putting a stop to over-development.
Help us stop this destruction by sending the letter below, asking each political party leader to clarify his stand by pledging to protect Malta’s natural heritage, by halting the destruction of our urban trees, our beautiful old gardens, countryside and unspoilt beaches, in favour of our health and the heritage of future generations.
