Khirki Masjid-approached from the Khirki village in South Delhi. This was a mosque built by Khan-i-Jahan Maqbul Tilangani, the Prime Minister of Feroz Shah Tughlaq (1351–1388) of the Tughlaq Dynasty.
Despite all the glory the architecturally fine ancient monument lies in a state of utter neglect, hidden from view from all sides by modern buildings, without as much as a sign board of its name nor a proper path leading to it.
Khirki village in south Delhi has no time for heritage laws. From the roof of its Tughlaq-era Khirki Masjid, you can see workers with hammers at work inside houses and scaffolding raised along the walls of buildings creeping up an arm's length away, even as drilling machines drown out all other sounds in the vicinity. This, when rules for the protection of national monuments clearly prohibit construction within 100 metres, and allow it between 100-300 metres only after permission from heritage bodies.
Experts say the 14th-century Masjid is vulnerable to vandals partially due its location inside an urban settlement, and also due to the apathy of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).
It is sad that this Mosque built during the reign of Firuz Shah Tughluq and commissioned by his powerful vizier Khan-i Jahan Junan Shah is today lost inside the settlements due to rapid urbanization of Delhi.
