Protect Health Care for All: Reject Newsom’s Plan to Freeze Medi-Cal for Immigrants in CA

The Issue

Governor Gavin Newsom once promised health care for all Californians, regardless of immigration status. Now, he’s turning his back on that commitment by proposing a freeze on new Medi-Cal enrollments for low-income immigrants starting in 2026 and charging $100 monthly premiums to those already enrolled by 2027.

This proposal punishes some of the most vulnerable members of our communities — hardworking families who pay taxes, raise children, and contribute to the state’s economy. Denying them access to basic health care not only goes against California’s values but also threatens public health and drives up emergency room costs in the long run.

Health care is a human right.

We shouldn’t balance the budget on the backs of people who already have so little. Instead of targeting immigrants, let’s explore fairer solutions like corporate tax reform and reducing inefficiencies elsewhere in the system.

We call on state lawmakers to reject Governor Newsom’s plan and keep California moving forward — not backward — on the path to universal care.

Sign now to demand health justice for everyone who calls California home.
