The Issue

As residents of Florida, my family and I deeply cherish the pristine quality of our environment and the health of our community. Unfortunately, our drinking water is currently under severe threat due to proposed changes in Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations. Without urgent intervention, the safety of our water supply—and the health of families like ours—might be compromised.

Florida currently lacks state-level protections against hazardous chemicals known as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS. These substances are linked to various health issues, including cancer. Up until now, we have relied on strict federal laws to keep our water safe. However, these rules are at risk of being weakened by the current administration, significantly increasing the likelihood of PFAS contamination in our water sources.

If the proposed changes are enacted, pollutants could begin infiltrating our water before any new protective measures take effect. According to the Environmental Working Group, PFAS chemicals, sometimes called "forever chemicals," persist in the environment and accumulate in the human body over time. This means that even small increases in contamination can have lasting and devastating impacts on public health.

Consider that an estimated 110 million Americans may have PFAS-contaminated water, and our state lacks the legal framework to effectively combat this threat. Without immediate action, Florida's residents—including children and vulnerable populations—will be left defenseless against the looming crisis.

We demand that current, stringent EPA laws remain in place while urging state leaders to develop robust regulations tailored to Florida's unique environmental challenges. This is not just about avoiding legal uncertainty in the face of federal changes; it's about protecting the people who live here now and preserving the future for generations to come.

By signing this petition, you join the call to keep Florida's drinking water safe. Our children's health, our resources, and our future depend on your action. Act now to ensure we maintain and improve the quality of our water. Please sign and support this vital cause.
