This week, No 10 Downing Street took the decision to exclude certain sectors of the established national, mainstream media from their regular briefings. A handful of selected titles were invited to a press call with Prime Minister Boris Johnson's un-elected aides. Other journalists within the Lobby, the cohort of political journalists based at Westminster, including the Press Association news agency, the Daily Mirror and i newspapers, tried to attend, but were prevented from entering.

The collective group of reporters and correspondents from newspapers and broadcast outlets, including political editors Laura Kuenssberg (BBC), Robert Peston (ITV) and Beth Rigby (Sky News) as well as reporters from the Daily Mail, Daily Telegraph, Sun, FT and Guardian all walked out in protest.

The editor of every major national newspaper in the UK, regardless of political leaning, wrote to Johnson in January urging him not to make this undemocratic change to Lobby briefings. An elected government is accountable to its constituents, and a free press holds those in office accountable.

The i’s editor, Oly Duff, addressed the ban, writing: “Scrutiny can be uncomfortable....Excluding select media titles effectively cuts out swathes of the population from receiving information on important policy"

Regardless of your own party politics, if you value the ability to hold those in government to account, please sign this petition and write to your constituency MP, asking them to formally lodge concerns about this move.
