Why this petition matters

Started by Juliana Schirmer

The world is changing and many are choosing to live a minimalist lifestyle by purchasing recreational vehicles for their mobile offices and tiny homes.

Since Covid there have been a record number of companies switching to a remote workforce which supports this mobile lifestyle. The RV industry has embraced this trend by building an unprecedented number of units, more than 600,000 units in 2021 -a 20% increase over 2020.

This has caused RV manufacturers to focus on quantity over quality and they are knowingly putting out units with significant operational and safety defects that get placed on dealer lots. Consumers purchase these units spending hundreds of thousands of dollars, only to get them home and find out they cannot use them and they must be taken in for immediate service.

Due to the number of units with defects, service centers are backlogged and parts are not available and units are inoperable for months at a time. This cuts into consumer warranty protections as the units sit waiting to be fixed for known issues, but time is ticking to be able to identify other concerns that would be covered under a paltry 12 month warranty.

In no other industry can you take $225k+ from someone and sell them a product that cannot be used with no recourse. No loaner unit to use for business or living purposes, no payment for out of pocket expenses, no refund of purchase price. You are stuck with a lemon and you are at their mercy to fix it.

This would have been an inconvenience for the “weekend warriors” of the past, but when purchased to be your primary residence, you are now homeless and the RV manufacturers do not care!

Please support this petition for new legislation to create true lemon law protections for RV purchasers. Let’s create protections so that manufacturers have an obligation to provide quality controls and a limited amount of time to fix the issues before fully refunding purchase price including out of pocket expenses for their defects.

Every time legislation moves forward, the RVIA (Recreational Vehicle Industry Association) works to kill the bill, to protect manufacturers profits over consumer rights and investments.

Let’s fight back to protect seniors, young people, minimalists, and business folks using these RVs as their homes and offices.
