Proposed LAUSD-LMU middle school for PVES/Westchester/Playa - Speak UP recommendations
We, as members of the communities of Westchester, Playa del Rey and Playa Vista strongly support the creation of a new LAUSD/LMU middle school for our communities to be located at Westchester Enriched Sciences Magnet. Given that location in Westchester, we believe that the middle school should serve all families in the Westchester/Playa enrollment area who want to attend.
Based on the proposed number of seats available at the new school, the proposed enrollment tiers, as well as current and projected enrollment figures at Playa Vista Elementary School (PVES), there is a strong likelihood that within 2-3 years nearly all of the seats would be taken up by PVES graduates exclusively. Yet the school will be located in Westchester.
In order to best serve our entire community, we urge you to adopt the following amendments to the proposed enrollment priorities.
1) Expand Tier 1 priority access to include all residents of Westchester, Playa del Rey and Playa Vista in addition to all matriculating PVES students.
2) Commit to expanding the number of seats available at the school, as necessary, to meet the enrollment demand of the above proposed Tier 1 families.
Playa Vista and Westchester are among the most diverse communities in Los Angeles, ranking 10th and 37th respectively out of 272 Los Angeles neighborhoods, according to the Los Angeles Times Diversity Ranking. We strongly believe that with these changes to the proposal, the school will provide an inclusive, high-quality option for more of the students in the Westchester/Playa communities.
