Promote Scratch as a tool for teaching coding to kids

The Issue

My personal journey with Scratch, a free programming language and online community, has not only fostered my fascination towards coding, but also equipped me with the fundamental skills necessary to comprehend this digital language. As someone who owes their coding knowledge to Scratch, I realize the potential it holds in shaping the minds of the younger generation.

Scratch, developed by the Lifelong Kindergarten Group at the MIT Media Lab, allows kids to program their own interactive stories, games, and animations — and share their creations with others in the online community. Since its introduction in 2007, Scratch has become a burgeoning social network with 57.6 million registered users from different parts of the globe, that emphasizes creative expression and iterative learning (source: 2020 Scratch Annual Report).

Among the coding education tools, Scratch stands out because it's not only intuitive and accessible but also creates a social environment where children learn the coding essentials. In a time when coding skills are no longer considered a luxury, but a necessity for the next generation's digital future, Scratch is a powerful tool.

It is therefore crucial to integrate Scratch into the standard computer science curriculum in our schools. This will provide students with a pliable and sound understanding of coding from a young age. We need to raise awareness among educators, administrators, and policy-makers about the importance of Scratch in shaping well-rounded, future-ready digital citizens.

Sign this petition to support Scratch's integration into kindergarten and primary school curriculum, thereby ensuring a fun and wholesome learning experience for our future leaders.
