Why this petition matters

Started by Rakesh Mehrotra

The world, and India in particular has paid only lip service for GHG mitigation. The agenda of rich countries is continue with usual and focus on technologies for emission reduction/ improving efficiencies. The growth nullifies all the gains. Life style changes, only can bring lasting solutions. Auto emissions can be reduced not just by fixing combustion efficiencies but by use of public transport, use of right sized motorised vehicle for personalised transport. The foremost Is the need for reducing commuting distances by sizing the cities properly, work place and habitat integration.

Cities are getting enlarged & commuting distances are increasing. FSI , land pricing and unchecked city growth will  undo all good that is done on other fronts.

India, has  multiple issues to be addressed & only visionary approach to power generation mix( extra ordinary incentives to renewables & removing all financial impediments  to renewable success).

The biggest problem in India is a narrow accountant vision rather than life cycle and environmentally  sustainable approach.

The country has to check haphazard development by penal action. Promote public transport through tax exemptions of all kinds.

Tax exempt renewable energy generation is an urgent need.

We also need to embrace circular economy & shun the concept of use & throw. Automobile / other products should be designed for long life and arbitrary 10/15 yr life for vehicles militates against the  emission concept( neglecting the embedded GHG / other emissions in recycle/ discard/ new vehicle manufacture). The concept of fueling the economy by replace ment market( as in US) is not in consonance with " circular economy" concepts for material, energy and environment conservation.
