Recent coverage of the BRAVE contract dispute has been questionable. Some local media outlets have been quick to accept the narrative of an obviously partisan group, dragging community members through the mud with no due diligence about the merits of the claims. Simple background research should have been done BEFORE premature reporting. This type of journalism is not only irresponsible, it is also dangerous.
The free exchange of information is the cornerstone of our democracy. It is the ethical responsibility of journalists to ensure that the information they report is accurate, fair, and thoroughly researched and that they do not take actions that compromise their ability to remain unbiased in the process of gathering and reporting that information. Without adhering to these principles, public trust erodes.
The Society of a Professional Journalists provides a code of ethics that ensures ethical journalism. The citizens of Baton Rouge deserve a press that commits to maintaining ethical integrity. We demand our media outlets adhere to the principles listed below.
- Seek Truth And Report It-take responsibility for and verify accuracy of content clearly separating fact from commentary providing context and making sure not to misrepresent or oversimplify.
- Minimize Harm- balance the public’s need for information with potential harm by treating sources, subjects, colleagues, and members of the public as human beings deserving of respect.
- Act Independently- avoid conflicts of interest, real or perceived, or political or other outside activity that compromises integrity or the appearance of impartiality or otherwise damages credibility.
- Be Accountable And Transparent- take responsibility for one’s work explaining ethical choices, quickly responding to questions about accuracy, clarity or fairness, acknowledging mistakes and correcting them promptly.
