Justice Student started this petition to Professors and

Professors at the University of Massachusetts Boston, and around the country, are using Honorlock to proctor their exams. While cheating during the pandemic has created a need for the proctoring of exams, doing so in a way that violates our privacy is unethical and makes a lot of students uncomfortable. This program requires a webcam and microphone (that you have to provide them access to) in order to function. In addition, you need to include a scan of your face and a 360 view of your workspace. If you do not comply with Honorlocks requests, you cannot take the test and therefore your grade results in a 0. Other ways this violates our privacy • Any information you enter in Honorlock (pictures of your room, your face,) is stored indefinitely in an unknown database • Logs file that contains data about all device on your network and your internet activity • Requires Google chrome which is notorious for data collection and privacy concerns • They will sell you personal information to whoever they want This is a blatant violation of our privacy. If a professor requires this program, you're forced to waive your privacy rights or get 0% on an exam. Honorlock gains access to your IP address which can lead to a lot of personal student data or even data from other devices connected to the same network to be breached. This can eventually lead to having personal data from our homes be sold or held by an unknown third party. Please stand with us against this obtrusive program that clearly violates our right to privacy. Schools should not have the ability to take away our privacy out of suspicion. The school or company doesn't have a right to our personal homes and data. "Arguing that you don't care about the right to privacy because you have nothing to hide is no different than saying you don't care about free speech because you have nothing to say." "When you say, 'I have nothing to hide,' you're saying, 'I don't care about this right.” – Edward Snowden
