On behalf of the students of ME 309 in the Fall 2017 semester, I would like to propose a change to the course grade percentages awarded to the different aspects of the course. Since the first week, it was clear that laboratory quizzes could be expected to be very challenging. Now, following the first exam, there is ample data available to show that these quizzes are not indicative of students' understanding of the material covered in the lecture portion of the class. In contrast, homework in ME 309 is much more directly correlated to the lecture material of the course and takes much more attention for students to complete consistently. Thus, these quizzes are grossly overvalued in terms of their 10% contribution to the overall course grade while homework only contributes to 5% of the overall course grade. With such a small sample size of quizzes, this problem may not be fully solved through normalization of quiz grades. It is, therefore, the recommendation of all those who sign this petition that these percent contributions be switched in order to better assess students' actual level of understanding of the topics related to fluid mechanics covered in ME 309 at Purdue.
