University of East Anglia (UEA) Developing Teaching Skills (DTS) Programme started this petition to Professor David Richardson (Vice Chancellor of the University of East Anglia)

We call for a reversal of the recent decision to cut the University of East Anglia's (UEA) successful, popular and in-demand Developing Teaching Skills (DTS) programme and replace it with online content from 2019/20 onwards. Discontinuing the DTS programme threatens to negatively impact the quality of teaching and learning, and the student and staff experience, at UEA.

The DTS programme provides a vital resource for the many postgraduates who teach at UEA, and newly-appointed lecturers with limited teaching experience, to gain the practical skills, confidence and knowledge necessary to provide high quality teaching for undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Crucially, the DTS programme provides participants with invaluable hands-on experience practising their teaching skills in the face-to-face situations they will be teaching in at UEA, and receiving constructive feedback and guidance on how to improve their teaching.

Online learning can be effective if used appropriately, but in this case it is inappropriate and cannot hope to adequately replace the experiential learning approaches used in the DTS programme. We therefore call to continue the DTS.

Save the DTS!
