Our Purpose: The issue of police violence/brutality is an extraordinarily complex issue. There is no single answer. But a critical first step is to prevent unempathetic and non-compassionate police officers from entering the police force. Research strongly indicates that human empathy and violence/aggression are inversely related. The most effective solutions are simple to implement and inexpensive, so thank you for taking the time to read this proposal.

Police violence in America is a persistent and growing problem that has been at the center of the public eye for many months and years. We need a simple solution to produce a more compassion-focused police force in our communities.

The majority of proposed policing reforms require high costs and complicated policy enforcement–a huge barrier to effectively solving the problem. The proposed action is simple: use a well-established method to assess compassionate communication and ethical obligation in hiring new police officers.

The CASPer Exam is a 90-minute situational judgment test currently used by numerous medical schools to evaluate and assess how an individual responds to high-pressure interpersonal scenarios, measuring empathy, communication, and compassion. This effectively simulates the critical situations police officers face every day.

We propose that all applicants to police academies across the nation must sit for the brief CASPer Exam and be admitted on the basis of a cutoff score. The goal is to prevent unempathetic applicants from joining, not to create an obstacle for our compassionate future-officers. This will ensure that all police officers who graduate and join the police force are compassionate individuals focused on protecting all individuals in our communities and prioritizing de-escalation methods–reducing the probability of police violence/brutality which costs invaluable lives and millions in taxpayer money for litigation.

Small, simple steps in the right direction are necessary as we move forward as a global community to reduce police violence/brutality. We need your support to make it a reality and save thousands of lives.

If you agree with this proposal, please consider forwarding this to your family and friends or on social media. We need you.

**CASPer exam evaluations are conducted by an external organization and no prior preparation is required for test-takers, therefore removing any significant burden on policing institutions, applicants, and governmental organizations.

The Need is Overwhelming:

  • More than one thousand people are killed by police every year in America (Source)
  • Nearly sixty percent of victims did not have a gun or were involved in activities that should not require police intervention such as harmless "quality of life" behaviors or mental health crises (Source)
  • False arrests, civil rights violations and excessive force are just some of the claims made by civilians, costing taxpayers over $300 million in fiscal year 2019 (Source)
  • Law enforcement training focused on presenting scenarios and emphasizing humane and calm responses has seen great success (Source), and the earlier we can emphasize these values with real-life scenarios, the better for our communities
