Dear Principal,

We are writing to you as Strathclyde students worried about the impact the forthcoming industrial action will have on our studies. 14 days of strike action, over a 4 week period, will have serious consequences on our performance in our assignments and exams.

We believe this further round of strike action to have been totally avoidable. Had the University, through its national representative bodies, Universities UK and the University and Colleges Employers Association, ensured a better deal for staff, we would not be facing a further disruption to our learning.

We immediately call on you to do everything you can to influence the UUK and UCEA to address the concerns of staff, so that strike action can be avoided.

We fully support the lecturers, librarians & professional staff of the Universities and Colleges Union (UCU) in their asks. We believe their pensions should be protected & more should be done to address their concerns around work casualisation and inequalities. Research from the UCU has shown that across the university sector, more than half of academics are employed on precarious contracts, pay has fallen by 17% in the last 10 years and there is still an astonishing 15.9% gender pay gap. This is totally unacceptable.

As students, some of us may go on to work in universities and become the lecturers of tomorrow. This is not a working environment we wish to inherit for ourselves.

We desperately ask that the management of Strathclyde University do all they can to ensure better conditions for the staff so to avoid this continuous disruption to our learning. Undoubtedly, students’ satisfaction scores returned via the annual National Student Survey are likely to be impacted by our lost learning time.

Please support your staff and support your students.
