Unmediated Student Media
The Wilson Beacon is a publication that has always been a public forum. On the first day of the 2015-2016 school year, our new principal, Kimberly Martin, instituted a policy of prior review. In messages to the Wilson community, Martin has stated that she expects all teachers and staff to "make decisions based on student learning." We argue that her decision to prior review will ultimately have the opposite effect. She requested that we not only send her our monthly paper, but each individual website story we want to publish. Even after we presented valid reasons as to why the policy is ineffective and intimidating, she insisted that from now on The Beacon will have to comply with her rule. Though Martin says that she will try not to censor anything we want to publish, prior review leads to self-censorship. It is a fundamental shift in who holds ultimate responsibility for the content of our news. Martin needs to recognize the detrimental effects, understand the educational value in an environment free of prior review, and reconsider her request. We ask that you sign this petition, and in doing so, support The Beacon in representing the opinions of the Wilson student body.
