The arts programs at Twality Middle School in Tigard are once again being threatened. Within the next 2 weeks the Choir Director will be removed and the Orchestra, Band and Drama teachers will be expected to teach choir if nothing is done. This is going to have a dramatic affect not only on the choir (students being taught by non-choir teachers) but also on all the other arts programs. Jazz band will be eliminated, drama and orchestra and band will have fewer classes to offer, and class sizes will increase once again. The yearly musical that is a highlight for all students and the community at large will also be eliminated. This decision is being made at the school level by the principal and is supported by Tigard-Tualatin School District administration.
This plan will not only hurt students at Twality, but will have far-reaching effects in the two high schools. For these programs to remain strong, they must be supported starting in elementary school and middle school to provide the underpinnings for students to excel in high school. If programs are eliminated, students are no longer given the opportunity to experience Jazz Band for instance, and will probably not elect to take it in high school thereby chipping away at the entire program.
Choir students being taught by non-choir certified teachers will not bring a complete complement of skills to the students thereby doing them and parents a disservice. Students will most likely loose interest and not elect to take choir in high school.
Finally, the arts programs at Twality are a source of pride for all of the students and are well known throughout the community. Twality has always been known as “the arts middle school” in the district. The musical, choir performing at the state capitol, and the jazz band and choir visiting all the elementary schools and senior centers will all come to an end. These are experiences our students will never get back.
Principal Carol Kinch must maintain Drama, Orchestra, Choir, and Band at Twality Middle School with teachers that specialize in these areas. We can all make a difference. Please sign this petition to stop the elimination of the Choir Director at Twality Middle School!
Please send this petition to everyone you know today. Urgent action is requested!
Please stop the elimination of Ryan Lee, the Choir Director at Twality Middle School! Expecting band, orchestra and drama teachers to teach choir does not make sense and is another blow to the already underfunded and tenuous arts program.
Along with this unwise decision will be the elimination of Jazz Band; a vibrant, and exciting class that is loved by students. Band will be compressed, creating huge classes with one teacher to teach fledgling students how to play an instrument.
Choir field trips – gone. All the choir students took so much pride in performing for our legislators!
Drama musical – eliminated. A showcase of the amazing talent of Twality drama students. All gone.
This decision is going to have far reaching consequences that will eventually affect students at the high school level as well.
The performing arts programs at Twality are a source of pride for all of the students and are well known throughout the community. Twality has always been known as “the arts middle school” in the district. The musical, choir performing at the state capitol, and the jazz band and choir visiting all the elementary schools and senior centers will all come to an end. These are experiences our students will never get back.
Please find another solution to the need to eliminate teachers. Other areas that could be cut are food services, cooking, technology, teen living, etc. Also, by having just one furlough day (like most other school districts in the Portland area are doing) the district would save nearly $350,000!
Please, lets come up with another solution!
Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter.
