I am a senior at Nathan Hale Ray High School, i am fortunate enough that the school gives out free breakfast and lunch every day. There was a change to scheduling and we are now not allowed to get breakfast past 7:30am which was not the case just 2 weeks ago. Our school day starts at 7:30am and runs until 2. The problem about this schedule is that many students don’t get into school before 7:26am, this gives students 4 minutes to get breakfast and get to class on time. this is simply not enough time for students to get food and get to class. I personally wake up at 6:15, and since my friends are not allowed to drive to school i drive them, i do not make it to school until 7:30am most days. I had a conversation with our principal mr.eckert about the situation and he is fully convinced breakfast is a distraction and shouldn’t be an option during our home room blocks (starts at 8:45am and runs till 9:41) this is still breakfast time for the rest of us even if mr.eckert doesn’t think so. students in the same situation as me will not eat dinner and then rush out the door before breakfast, after mornings like this I will solely think about how hungry i am and how much i hate being in school. being able to walk down to the lunch room during MY OWN study time shouldn’t be a problem. I have conversations with the lunch ladies, who are some of the sweetest people, don’t want breakfast to end after 7:30am they are fully aware that students need breakfast past 7:30am. my peers have expressed the same emotions as I, yet i’m still not technically allowed to get breakfast past 7:30 i do because kids need food to learn correctly.
