Our argument against dress codes is that it restricts students' first Amendment rights to freedom of expression. The idea that students are restricted to wear certain types of clothing or not allowed to wear things that they want to school is the center of our debate. Many students express themselves and who they are through clothing. For example, women like to wear spaghetti straps, but they face the conflict of, “shoulders being distracting.”  And men like to wear hats to add to their outfits, but it's considered “rude” even if it's not intended to be disrespectful. The objective of dress codes is to make the learning environment of schools more productive, but it often does the opposite. Students often get pulled out of their learning just to change their shirt, put on longer shorts, take off their leggings, or put their hats away. Students who wear clothing that exceed the dress code are not intending to do it just to break the rules or make a statement, they are doing it for themselves, and want to be able to wear what they want. Students are most comfortable with their style, and if they have to modify it to fit the criteria of the dress code, that can cause insecurities about themselves and their looks. Faculty should let teenagers be teenagers. You should sign this petition to help us change our dress code in Medway middle school.
