In 1970? at Holland Park Comprehensive, London, and elsewhere, an attempt was made to establish a National Union of School Students
Objectives were to challenge corporate attitudes to hair styles, uniform, corporal punishment, compulsory religious assemblies etc through democratic organisation + negotiation with ‘the powers that be’
It lasted some years; there are accounts online

Appearances shouldnt matter when it comes to education. A student should be comfortable in their own skin. Not made to feel uncomfortable.

I'm a Co-Captain of a online social club called the bearded villains.

This is outlandish that the school would be making him shave. If your interested in in Iteland here is the information to get connected with the broomthers in Ireland, these guys would be around and happy to stand behind you in this fight.

Your personal appearance has nothing to do with your education. I agree that discipline and uniform can be good for many reasons but in terms of facial hair, this is something very personal and shaving cannot be forced upon anyone.

It is the right of a person to grow a beard if they want (as long as it is well groomed)- this should not stop anyone receiving an education and nor should the right to grow a beard be taken away from anyone.

Many boys/men look a lot better with beards than clean shaven and can actually make them look more professional rather than making them 'unprofessional' as such.

Many boys/men have extremely rapid growing facial hair which can also be very coarse and shaving is more than just an inconvenience- it can cause irritation shaving that often as well as ingrown hairs and scarring.

Beards can give a man confidence and is often seen as a transition period from boyhood to manhood- why on Earth take this away from these young budding boys, just let them be. Not only that, but beards can really give a man self-confidence in his appearance. Many people don't look as good without a beard a beard can transform their appearance and make them feel good about themselves.

Your school should be about the development of young boys to men. But it seems by enforcing clean shaving, you are taking the right to manhood away from these boys and denying this boy in particular his rightful education.

I’m signing because I believe school should be a safe place where students can express & learn to respect each other’s individuality. Uniforms are constraint enough. How are these boys supposed to express themselves when they are expected to be clones?! Shameful!

The control freak who decided that having a beard was grounds to refuse someone their education deserves to be taught a lesson.

Disappointing to see the school is still being run by petty bullies.

I think it's awful to inhibit someone from their education because of facial hair

I am signing because I believe everyone should have the right to look, wear what they want to. It is totally against ones freedom of you impose something on them. The school's policy is not all compatible with this century's values and rights. I have great sympathy with this young boy but with that also respect him to stand his ground for his rights. Well done young man.
Such policies should not have any space in the UK and the modern world.
