Paint Branch Elementary School is in Lakeland the 131-year-old historic African American community of College Park. Honor the history and heritage of Lakeland by renaming the school Lakeland Elementary School.

The name Lakeland Elementary School honors the legacy of education in Lakeland. schools in Lakeland. The community's first school opened in 1903. Until 1950 Lakeland Elementary School was located within the site of what is now Lake Artemisia Natural Area. That school building dated from 1925 and was erected with support from the Lakeland community and the Julius Rosenwald Foundation. In 1950 the former Lakeland High School ( a Rosenwald school dating from 1928) was converted for use of lower grades and became known as Lakeland Elementary School.

In the 1970s homes of three long time Lakeland families were sacrificed for the building of Paint Branch Elementary. In that same decade two thirds of the Lakeland community was destroyed though an urban renewal process. Honor the legacy of Lakeland by renaming Paint Branch Elementary School to Lakeland Elementary School.
