What is the biggest threat to democracy?

Money is the single biggest factor in corruption and the break-down of democracy. Lobbying is the single biggest threat to Candian democracy right now. To be clear, this is not an attack on capitalism, nor is this a political party issue. This is a Canadian issue.

Why is it that corporations with the largest amount of capital have the greatest ability to meet and talk to our politicians? For example, why should “big pharma” be able to meet with the prime minister's office more than a small business? My goal with this petition is to entirely eliminate lobbying in Canadian politics.

You may think lobbying works for everyone. This has been proven to be false time and time again. Those with the largest amount of funds have the best ability to create “small worlds of intense interactions” with our leaders. We appointed the leaders therefore, their decision making should reflect the greatest value for the most Canadians. This does not happen when our leaders are being persuaded by industries that have the most amount of money and thus the highest share of their attention.

To be extra clear, this is not a single party issue (all parties are as guilty as the last). This is not a capitalism issue. This is not an attack on Canadian society as it stands now. This is an attack on our democracy and needs to stop immediately. Money in politics is bad with no exceptions. We should not let this become another divisive issue between us as Canadians. We should band together to solve this issue.

I propose that we sign this petition, deliver it to our leaders of this amazing country and demand that we remove “pay-to-play” (a.k.a lobbying) in our politics once and for all. Will you step up to make real change that we will all benefit from?
