Prime Therapeutics is changing Synthroid to be a "non-preferred" drug and suggesting the replacement be generic. This means either a price hike for Synthroid or not covered at all according to the phone call I made yesterday to the company. FDA standards are different for both brand and generic drugs.
Generic drugs do not need to contain the same inactive ingredients as the brand name product and the absorption difference found in studies was 3.5%. If you are a patient, you know this difference can feel enormous. Thyroid patients and cancer survivors all over the world have claimed they feel so much better on the brand, myself included.
It has been recommended that thyroid cancer survivors who no longer have a thyroid only take brand named and not the generic. Symptoms of thyroid disease such as mood swings, anxiety, headaches, sweating, sleep disturbance, weight loss/gain, hair loss, fatigue, brain fog, muscle pain have all been minimized for so many patients who switch to the brand Synthroid.
Patients have enough of a daily challenge. Tell Prime Therapeutics to please keep Synthroid preferred.
