Offices of Rawalakot-based daily Mjadla sealed on publishing a research report
On August 24, 2017, Rawalakot-based daily Mjadla ran a report based on a research conducted by UK-based researcher. According to the survey, as reported in daily Mjadla, over 70 percent respondents among 10000 people surveyed, wanted independence.
A day after the publication of this news story, the city administration arrived the offices of daily Mjadla, the newspaper staff was asked to leave while the offices were sealed.
This is a blatant attack on the free expression and the press freedom. This action against daily Mjadla mere because a news report in it contradicts the official discourse says volumes about the state of democratic liberties available to the state subjects in Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
Ironically, Pakistan and their allies in Azad Jammu Kashmir continue presenting Azad Jammu Kashmir as the base camp for the liberation of the State of Jammu and Kashmir.
This episode shows yet again that any expression of genuine dissent is resented in Azad Jammu and Kashmir the way it is quelled in the Kashmir Valley.
We the undersigned while condemning the action against daily Mjadla demand that the offices of the newspapers are unblocked immediately.
We further demand that the right to free expression is respected and journalists should have the full freedom to report the truth without the fear of retribution.
