Better Beaches for All Jamaicans
This petition had 2,054 supporters
We, the undersigned, register our deep concern with regard to the growing trend of exclusion of Jamaicans from their own coastline, including beaches of all types. We have noted the divestment of formerly public beaches into private hands, elimination of public access points to the coastline, obstruction of views of the sea and restriction of access by hotels and tourist attractions.
We deplore the evident poor management of beaches by the state, private owners, tourism interests, fishing interests and beach users themselves. We are concerned about the continued removal of sand and beach vegetation, both legally and illegally, which renders our beaches that much more vulnerable to storms and sea level rise. We have observed the use of hard structures (seawalls, breakwaters, groynes, gabion baskets) without thorough study, although it is well known that such structures disrupt natural processes for sand transport and retention.
We call upon the Government of Jamaica (GOJ) to ensure there are sufficient quality public beaches with appropriate access points at an affordable price for all Jamaicans. This has been a GOJ commitment since 1954 but it has yet to be effectively implemented. We call on the planning and regulatory agencies to adhere to requirements in Development Orders and other planning documents which call for conservation of beaches, provision of access to the public, appropriate setbacks and protection of views of the sea.
Our target for this petition is 5,000 signatures and it will be delivered to Prime Minister The Most Hon. Andrew Holness.
