In a recent press note, the Government of India announced the establishment of Army Welfare Fund, Battle Casualties as a welfare measure to rehabilitate the families of the deceased soldiers and battle casualties. The fund is permitted to raise its corpus through donations and contributions from the general public, individuals and philanthropic organizations.
It must be reminded that Pride, Honour, Loyalty and Self-respect are the founding stones on which Military ethos and culture is built. These corner stones decide the success and failure of the purpose of any Armed Force. Wars are largely won by men and not machines. The motivation of men is molded by the Military Ethos and dictated by the founding stones. The smallest hurt to the foundation would fracture the Institution and devastate the Forces. In return for the pledge of life to protect the sovereign integrity of the nation, the least that a soldier expects is that his pride, honour and self-respect are left untouched.
The establishment of the Army Welfare Fund, Battle Causalities hurt those very foundation of the Armed Forces. If the Army has to raise funds from the general public to rehabilitate the families of soldier’s lost to the cause of Nation, it is a deep scar left on the Pride, Honour and Self-Respect of any human being. It is the bounden and solemn duty of the Government to ensure that the families of martyred soldiers are taken reasonable care of. A soldier is willing to accept as little as the government may think it affordable but throwing him and his family to the benevolence of general public does no good to his morale nor the fair name of the Nation.
We therefore demand that the proposed Fund seeking donations/contributions from the general public be stopped forthwith and the responsibility for rehabilitation be undertaken by the Government to the best of its ability and means.
