Stop Bailiffs in the Pandemic
Stop Bailiffs in the Pandemic
Why this petition matters
Bailiffs should be stopped from going to people's homes to enforce collection of fines from Magistrates Courts during the pandemic. It is causing distress and unnecessary anxiety for people who are sometimes in self-isolation or recovering from illnesses, many of whom have lost their jobs or not able to work for some time.
It is not right that government should classify Bailiffs as essential workers and be allowed to go around to collect fines for government when Bailiffs are not allowed to enforce judgments for individuals during the pandemic. The fines should not have been passed on to Bailiffs in the first place during this pandemic.
Government should set a good example and show that money is not more important than people's health and wellbeing. It rings hollow when Government says people's lives are its priority when money appears to be its priority. Most of the people who owe fines are not able to afford them in the first place. They should not be harassed or hounded during the pandemic especially when they are not able to negotiate a sensible payment plan with Bailiffs most of who are desperate and just want to get their commission.
