A human rights bill for ALL Australians - not a "religious freedoms" bill for some

Prime Minister Scott Morrison and his Government are seeking to introduce “religious freedoms” legislation that will permit religious organisations and individuals to discriminate against Australians on the basis of their gender, sexual preference, beliefs and affiliations regardless of other anti-discrimination legislation.

We seek to to remind Prime Minister Scott Morrison and his Government that:

  • Australia is a constitutionally secular democracy, not a theocracy
  • It is unacceptable to create special legislation that gives religious organisations and individuals the right to discriminate against Australians
  • Australia is the only liberal democracy that does not have either a constitutionally entrenched bill of rights or a national human rights act
  • Establishing special “religious freedoms” legislation in the absence of a Bill of Rights for ALL Australians is unacceptable
  • The legitimate rights and freedoms of Australian organisations and individuals with religious beliefs and affiliations must be protected under an Australian Bill of Rights that ensures and protects the legitimate rights and freedoms of ALL Australians

We urge Prime Minister Scott Morrison and his Government to immediately abandon their proposed “religious freedoms” legislation, and to replace it with a national process to establish a Bill of Rights for ALL Australians within the next term of the Federal Parliament.
