Dear Prime Minister,
As many as 39 crimes against women were reported every hour in India, up from 21 in 2007, according to Crime in India 2016 report by NCRB. The increase might be partly attributed to increase in reporting.
That being said, Conviction rate for crime against women lowest in decade
At 18.9%, the conviction rate for crimes against women in 2016, as we said, was the lowest in since 2007.
If reporting has increased, it's only logical that conviction should too.
Safety of women is a non-partisan issue. We don't want political rhetoric about how your governments cares for the "beheno". We need our nation's leader to tell us how he is intends to solve this problem.
Success of a government in terms of women's rights can not be measured by how many gas cylinders did they distribute. In fact schemes like these if branded as for women reinforce the gender stereotype that the kitchen is where the women belongs. This further leads to inequality and power disparity which is the root cause of violence that's perpetrated against women.
We need the government to not just speak but constitute a committee that will put together a ten year plan on how do they intend to take corrective measures towards gender equality. Women don't want affirmative action. Women don't want reservations. We just want to be safe. That's the least the state can guarantee.
