Make all children's shoes - regardless of size - VAT exempt for British shoppers

Under current UK regulations for VAT, those buying shoes for young children do not pay VAT on the products they purchase. HMRC accepts that footwear is designed for children up to and including size 6.5 for boys and 5.5 for girls.
However, many parents and guardians will find that they children outgrow shoes which fit within these guidelines at a much younger age than their peers, meaning that they have to pay more for shoes as VAT now applies to their purchase.
These costs can be prohibitive to parents, as they now have to pay 20 per cent more for shoes for their children.
While shoes for those aged under 14 can be VAT exempt should they be exclusively labelled as ‘suitable for children only’, this is a prohibitive measure, as often children will not opt for these styles. These rules also mean that retailers have to hold back certain styles for children exclusively, when they may be suitable for all.
Wynsors World of Shoes, experts in shoe fitting for children, believes that parents and guardians shouldn’t be out of pocket because their child is growing quickly. That’s why it is creating this petition for new legislation to be introduced that means children’s shoes are VAT exempt regardless of size so long as the wearer is aged 14 years old and younger.
Introducing this change in legislation would save parents and guardians money on what are an essential purchase for their children.
