The Indian healthcare system consists of Govt Hospitals and Private healthcare providers.  The less said about Govt Hospitals the better. We all know it and we have all suffered on this account. The private health care system consists of General practitioners,  Nursing Homes, and Corporate Hospitals. In all the cases whether Govt or Private it is extremely difficult to get timely and quality healthcare. In the Govt sector, the hospital facilities and Doctors, Nurses and other support staff are overburdened. Therefore, even the poorest of the poor, hesitate to go to a Govt Hospital. The private healthcare system though responsive is expensive and has to be met out of the pocket of the patients. Very few Indians that too those who are working in the organised sector only are covered by Medical Insurance.  The vast majority of Indians do not have health insurance. Further the Nursing Homes and Corporate Hospitals have huge establishment overheads which are passed on to the patients. Hence, whether Govt or Private, the citizens suffer and do not get timely and quality medical care. I propose that we have a National Health Service like in the U.K.which is absolutely free for all residents of U.K.  The funding for this can come from compulsory health insurance for all citizens of India from the time of birth, so that the insurance premium will be a nominal affordable amount for the entire family. Apart from this the Government should reimburse the private healthcare providers  for providing quality and free healthcare to all the citizens irrespective of their economic status. The existing Govt Hospitals should be completely revamped and they should be handed over to the Govt Doctors for providing quality healthcare. There should be no distinction between Govt and Private Hospitals as far as the patient is concerned. If anybody needs medical attention he should be able to go to the nearest Hospital and he/she should get quality and timely medical care. Depending upon whether it is a Govt or Private Hospital the necessary reimbursement should be made to the Hospital management by the Govt/ Insurance Companies. This kind of a system is in vogue in the U.K., Europe and other welfare states like the Scandinavian countries etc. At present in India, in the Corporate Hospitals, we are following the American model, which is very expensive and unaffordable to most Indians and also probably not desirable. Even a small country like Cuba has free medical care to all its citizens, which is of world class. Many Americans themselves go to Cuba to avail the subsidised medical treatments. Hence I request the Prime Minister to take interest in this personally and establish a National Health Service in India where the Doctors and health care workers will be well paid and well looked after so that they don't perform medical procedures for profit! Also the NHS will ensure that Hospitals are managed by Doctors and other Healthcare professionals, instead of being managed by bureaucrats and controlled by Politicians! The Health Minister should only oversee the NHS and should not interfere in the Medical system. Finally there should be minimal political interference in the running of Govt as well as Private Hospitals. All healthcare personnel should be well paid and well looked after by the Govt so that they do not treat patients only if money is involved and neglect those who are poor or those who cannot afford to pay for healthcare.
